Graduated from the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts "Kr. Sarafov" (NATFA) in 1994 in the class of Prof. Nadezhda Seykova and Iliya Dobrev. In the period 1994-1995, he played on the stage of the N. O. Masalitinov Plovdiv Drama Theatre, and in 1995 he became part of the troupe of the Little City Theatre "Off The Channel". Since 2005, he has been the chairman of the Union of Bulgarian Actors.
In the Ivan Vazov National Theatre, he played one of his most emblematic roles: Petraki the deaf and mute in "Sumatoha" by Yordan Radichkov, dir. Ivan Dobchev, Krosnoto in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by W.Shakespeare, directed by Alexander Morfov, Stancho Deribeya in "Exiles" by Ivan Vazov, directed by Alexander Morfov, Raicho in the one-man play "A Weeping Angel" by Stefan Tsanev, directed Stoyan Radev and Stefan Stambolov in "The Spirit of the Poet" by Stefan Tsanev, directed by Margarita Mladenova.
In addition to the theatre stage, Hristo Mutafchiev also has many roles in the cinema.
He is the winner of numerous awards, among which: The award for a young actor "Ivan Dimov" in 2000, the UBA Award 2001 for the actor who played the most leading roles in the season 2000/2001, the Icarus Award 2005 for leading male role for Golemanov in "Golemanov", directed by Marius Kurkinski, award for a male role from the "Days of Zoran Radmilovic" International Festival, Zajcar, Serbia in 2016 - for the role of Agaton Agassich in "The Bereaved Family", directed by Bina Haralampieva, ASKEER Award 2021 for leading male role in "Crying of an Angel" by Stefan Tsanev, directed by Stoyan Radev. In 2018, he was awarded the Order of "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" - necklace, for particularly significant merits in the field of culture and art.
